Starting January 30, we will be taking a close look at the first nine chapters of Proverbs (thirteen sessions).
One big problem with all the advice we hear today from our culture is it that it always begins with “ME.” We are told by modern day sages that if we first “get in touch” with our inner selves and figure out life ourselves, then we will realize true satisfaction and fulfillment in life.
Solomon and the sages who share their wise insights in the book of Proverbs do so not as professors addressing students in a college lecture hall, but rather as seasoned commanders charging their troops to prepare them for battle. Solomon embeds the wisdom he has received from God in several intensely personal and passionate father and son talks about life. His hope is that they will penetrate the hearts of his readers to prompt them to think more deeply and personally about God and about life.
Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it. – Matthew 7:13–14
